Intent - Our Aims

Our bespoke PSHE curriculum plays a vital role in nurturing emotionally intelligent, responsible, and empowered individuals. It equips children with the skills to navigate the challenges of modern life in Oldham, online, and beyond. At the same time, it fosters confidence, clear communication, and a strong sense of identity—enabling them to thrive personally and contribute meaningfully to their community and the wider world.

Our aim is to:

  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets statutory requirements and goes beyond to cater to the specific needs of our children.
  • Embed the Skills for Life programme across all year groups and the Think Equal programme in EYFS, ensuring children develop a strong foundation in emotional well-being, social skills, and safety.
  • Ensure all children understand what it means to be a good friend, how to show kindness, and how to keep themselves safe, including through the NSPCC PANTS rule.
  • Address local issues prevalent in Oldham, such as county lines, knife crime, extremism, and online safety, through a tailored and responsive curriculum.
  • Promote an understanding of citizenship, both locally and globally, encouraging children to take responsibility for the environment and engage in community-based projects.
  • Develop confident, responsible, and respectful individuals who are prepared for life beyond primary school.

Implementation - How Will We Do This

The PSHE curriculum is delivered through a carefully planned programme that ensures progression from EYFS to Year 6. Our implementation strategies include:

  • Structured Lessons: Weekly PSHE lessons that follow the PSHE Association recommendations and are tailored to meet the needs of our children.
  • Skills for Life Programme: Fully embedded in all year groups to build confidence, resilience, and decision-making skills.
  • Think Equal Programme: Strengthening EYFS provision with a focus on emotional literacy and inclusive values.
  • Cross-Curricular Links: Ensuring PSHE is woven into subjects such as English, Geography, History and Science, using high-quality texts like Kick in Year 6 to explore global trade and ethical issues, and Giraffes Can’t Dance in KS1 to highlight diversity and embracing differences.
  • Real-World Learning: Engaging with external visitors, including community police, knife crime campaigners, local MP’s and Justice of the Peace along with the NSPCC, and other local organisations, to provide real-life context to key topics.
  • Interactive & Practical Approaches: Encouraging role-play, discussions, debates (such as writing a new bill against single use plastics using the Parliamentary Loan box in KS2) and including reflective tasks to deepen understanding.
  • Assessment & Recording: Learning is often oral, (videos are posted on google classrooms) due to the high amount of discussion content in PSHE lessons. Classes do also record some of  their learning in books (using two different colours for start and end points) Self-assessment, peer discussions, and teacher observations track progress.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Children participate in initiatives such as recycling projects, school eco-committees, and local clean-up activities to develop environmental awareness and responsibility.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident in the confidence, awareness, and decision-making abilities of our children. We measure this through:

  • Pupil Voice: Children express understanding of personal well-being, relationships, and safety.
  • Behaviour and Attitudes: Pupils demonstrate kindness, respect, and resilience in everyday interactions.
  • Engagement in Learning: Children actively participate in discussions, activities, and projects, showing enthusiasm for real-world learning.
  • Application of Knowledge: Pupils can articulate how to stay safe online, manage friendships, and seek help when needed.
  • Community Involvement: Increased participation in local projects and awareness of social and environmental issues.
  • Readiness for Secondary School & Beyond: Pupils leave Broadfield as well-rounded individuals, equipped with essential life skills to navigate their future confidently.
